The Secret, Steve Pavlina, and Stuff Called HOLONS

The Secret meme continues to spread like wildfire. Recently, Salon castigated Oprah for endorsing it. Good points. But I think the criticisms are lacking some alternative views on The Law of Attraction, not to mention that it is uber-critical with Oprah, when Larry King and Ellen Degeneres also contributed to the spreading of The Secret to the mainstream.

But I digress.

(Warning: The following uses integral lingo. If you're new to this blog, pardon the jargon. Integral Geeks, carry on.)

What I'm interested in are more integral criticisms of The Secret. Julian Walker at Zaadz has already been doing a "crusade" on The Secret. And rightly so. Recently, I've also read Steve's critique of The Secret using integral lingo. It was short and sweet. So I asked him to post it on his Zaadz blog. He did. Then he added a short commentary on why I-I is indirectly supporting the "commercial con" of The Secret by ranking Steve Pavlina (a proponent of the Law of Attraction) as Turquoise in the latest issue of HOLONS news. As a long-time Steve Pavlina reader, I felt the urge to reply.

And since I like to stir the pot, I also started a thread on the I-I pod:

What the Hell? Is Steve Pavlina Turquoise?

So there. If this post doesn't make sense to you, good for you. I'm scratching my head too.

Rather than inciting the regular debate on whether or not X is at Y level at the Holons News site, it might make more sense for the reporters/editors at I-I to reframe the levels section and make it full of recommendations for the various levels.  That way really Integral things would be able to fall into multiple levels, and Holons wouldn't be so full of crappy stuff for the more basic levels (wrestling, fundamentalist extremist religious stuff, etc.), and instead post healthy stuff for all the different levels.  Some things, like Steve Pavlina's blog, would be healthy and interesting for a range of levels, from Infra-red (Beige) all the way up to Turquoise, because he offers some good practical ideas for accomplishing many things including being: healthier by eating more fresh vegetables (Infra-red), a more loving and respectful parent (Purple), independent and effective (Red), useful (Amber), efficient (Orange), creative and tolerant (Green), more understanding of how societies work (Teal), able to make a living making the world a better place (Turquiose).  He's even got some good suggestions for seeing how your own shadow ego gets in your way (Indigo).

Things that are less Integral, but still very healthy, like the organization Project for Public Spaces, that promotes better design for public spaces like streets and parks, would fit nicely into the levels from Infra-red up to Teal, since they cover things like basic physical health, good social environment, combining local control of communities with government policies, working with good scientific design, more beautiful and accessable streets, and systemwide restructuring for a more efficient environment for the whole, based on real social needs rather than traditional assumptions.

And then there is stuff like the Teletubbies, which is pretty much only Magenta, but it's great stuff for people who need a little more love and belongness, and maybe adds a bit of Green creatvity and tolerance for the audience.  Or a show such as Junkyard Wars, which pretty much only appeals to Red and Orange and maybe Green, but it does it so wonderfully!

Hmmmm, maybe I'll crosspost this on the Holons News forum at I-I…

At this point, I don't really know what to do with people's ideas of “psychic” stuff, so I just try to avoid offering my opinions about it.  I have a feeling that “supernatural” idea fall all over the map, rather than in just one spot, just like any complicated belief system based on people's perception of reality and the unknown.  Ultimately, I think things like paranormal and supernatural and psychic and religious stuff are really just one way of trying to understand things that we don't understand.  And we don't understand a heck of a lot, so there's a lot of paranormal, supernatural, psychic, religious ideas out there.
