Akeelah and the Bee is Eudaemonic!

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."  -- by  Marianne Williamson (not Nelson Mandela)

Serendipity with Akeelah and the Bee
A few weeks ago I was chillin' at Starbucks with my buddies doing the ghetto talk when I came across a serendipitous word printed on a Starbucks cup sleeve: eudaemonic. Then another week passed and I saw the same word again on a Starbucks barista board: eudaemonic. Now that was freaky, because I swear that the root word of that word is one of my favorite words in one of Ken Wilber's books (Grace and Grit).

Me too!  In fact, Grace and Grit is largely responsible for my refusing to be a regular 9-5er.  It's played a huge role in my eventual hiring at zaadz.  And I, Iike KW, came to be not-so-pleasant to be around when I heard my daemon but did not listen to it.  Now, on the contrary, I'm a lot of fun to be around, IMHO, LOL.

well, to me i guess i'm still at my “demon” phase. but at least i like to think that i'm a fluffy demon.

as for the “fun to be around” with in meatspace, i don't know how people perceive me, but judging from their treatment of me, i'd say that i'm an uber-cool guy.

as for the “fun to be around” with in cyberspace, i think it depends on how people perceive this bodymind's cyber-bloated-ego. but IMHO, those who can't handle ~C4Chaos got issues. there i said.

What is the deal with the Williamson quote being attributed to Mandela, does anyone know?  Even the link you provided is minisculely different from the print version (without contractions, lending a more stentorian tone).

eudaemonic was a great find.  Romping through 'Innovative Solutions to Animal Health Problems' and geeks with shoe computers was diverting, but the most interesting definition I found for euddaemonism was in my grandfather's old dictionary: the doctrine of happiness, or the system of philosophy which makes human happiness its highest object, declaring that the production of happiness is the foundation of virtue.  Also pertaining to the 11th house of astrology, signifying favorable happenings.

The truly great find though, was when I followed your links to discover 'A Tea with Turiya.'  Have you pursued publishing this wonderful piece?

i have no idea. thanks for the link though. i like your meaning of eudaemonism. i guess you can call me a eudaemonist too. even the Dalai Lama agrees:

According to the Dalai Lama, the purpose of our existence is to seek happiness.

thanks. i don't know what you mean, it's already published in the medium i prefer: blog :)

Okay, okay,  I am a hopeless luddite for actually liking books: you remember, those physical objects printed and bound and filled with lovely ideas?  I guess I should have clarified.  I would just love to see such beautiful writing find an audience not plugged into the blogoshpere!  It's rare enough in any format.

And I didn't find near the loveliness in eudaemonism online that I found in a toe-threatening sixty year old tome of a dusty dictionary.  Sometime's the physical world's nice.

of course, i got stacks of them. i even sleep with some. the problem with (traditional)books however is that, as of this writing, i cannot send it to anyone via hyperlink, unlike this book.

What's a “the physical world”?  Is that like meatspace, or something?
